White Stork Day

31 May is celebrated white stork day. This day was established by the Polish Society of Friends of Nature pro Natura in 2003. This is an opportunity to draw attention to the special place in Polish culture and landscape they occupy Storks.

White storks are one of the most famous and liked bird species in the country. An inseparable symbol of the Polish countryside. This bird was recognized as one of the unofficial symbols of the Polish.

Good to know:

  • in Poland in spring appears over 20% the world population of the white stork. At the same time, Poland is a country where nests the world's largest population of these birds.
  • the white stork usually measures from 95 to 110 centimeters, counting from the top of the head to the tail. Wingspan is from 180 up to 218 centimeters. The length of the red beak is 15 to 20 cm. An adult bird weighs up to 4.5 kg.
  • the average life expectancy of a stork is 8–9 years, although recorded record holders who lived more than 30 years.
  • stork nests are huge and very heavy – from year to year, developed by birds, they can reach a weight of up to two tons, and width of two meters.
  • storks having 4 chicks must provide them with about 3 kg of food per day. In the first days of life, the young storks are fed mainly with earthworms, later more varied Food. Adult storks must therefore devote even to hunting and feeding 10 hours a day.

Polish storks are subject to strict protection and belong to species requiring active protection. For the maintenance and conservation of the species white stork it is necessary to maintain and restore the areas constituting attractive feeding grounds for this species, such as: fertile meadows, pond edges or floodplains of rivers.
