Further notgelds in the MHE collection

Another 2 elckie notgeldy, this time with denominations of 5 and 20 brands went to the Historical Museum in Elk. Banknotes have been issued in November 1918 by the Ełcki Magistrate. These are not the first such banknotes purchased by the MHE. At the beginning of the year, the museum purchased 2 notgeldy 1923 with denominations of 1 million brands and 1 million brands with a print of 50 billions of brands. All new MHE acquisitions residents will be able to see 15 May during the European Museum Night.

Notgeld is a German the name of the substitute money most often issued at the beginning of the 20th century. This money was not issued by the central bank, but by institutions, such as private banks, businesses, municipalities or mines. Reason for which the replacement money was issued (usually in the form of a banknote), was the fact that money was collected completely (especially gold and silver coins) from market by the state authorities and, consequently, its absence in circulation. In this case, the it was the local authorities (including the city of Elk) that issued their own substitute money, which they paid their employees and contractors and thus introduced into circulation.

On the obverse of purchased banknote denomination expressed numerically and in words, its number of and the coat of arms of Elk, the date of issue and the issuer. On the reverse side of the banknote, the name of the (issuer), that the banknotes are valid in all member countries. city's cash registers, and the Magistrate will report three times on the call for "Lycker Zeitung" and "Lycker Kreisblatt". Finds there is also the following instruction: 'who will reproduce or falsified the banknotes shall be punishable by up to 10 years' imprisonment.' Denomination banknote on the reverse side is expressed numerically (in all four corners) and (as part of the background).
