Currently in Przedsiębiorstwo Energetyki Cieplnej in Ełk installs three boilers coal-fired and biomass boiler. As part of the project, one of three coal-fired boilers will be replaced by a new fired wood chips. The project provides for also the construction of a daily biomass warehouse with a movable floor, a boiler room hall biomass and maneuvering area.

Every from boilers in PEC is equipped with dedusting devices characterized by high the degree of reduction of dusty substances. Installation of a new biomass boiler will contribute to increase the production of thermal energy from renewable energy sources by another 25%, which means that two fired boilers together, wood chips will generate about 50% of all energy produced in PEC. This will make the Ełk district heating system an effective system. Energy efficient.  It will also decrease coal consumption by approx. 10 thousand tons per year, which will translate into a reduction in CO2 emissions to the atmosphere by approx. 23 thousand tons per year and to reduce the amount of fees emission.

Is is also one of the key climate issues in Europe and a world that contributes to the protection of the environment and the improvement of air quality. It is expected that the new boiler, including the biomass boiler currently in force, will be during the winter period, it will be the basic source of heat energy production.

- In our city we are aiming to make there were as many renewable energy sources as possible, hence the need to replace another boiler in Ełk PEC. One of our priorities is to protect the environment and improving air quality. For this purpose, we carry out projects such as surcharge for the replacement of coal furnaces in apartments. The city is a member the "Clean Air" programme, under which it is possible to obtain for this purpose additional financial resources. We have been investing in the purchase of hybrid buses for several years and soon also Electrical. We successively replace the lighting in the city with LED ones. Thermo-modernization of educational buildings and tree plantings are also carried out. – said the president of Ełk Tomasz Andrukiewicz.

Complete the cost of the project is PLN 30.75 million. For the implementation of the PEC project obtained co-financing from Norwegian funds (Financial Mechanism European Economic Area 2014-2021) in the amount of over PLN 9.55 million, from the state budget in of over PLN 1.68 million and a loan from the National Fund for Environmental Protection and Water Management in the amount of over PLN 13.73 million.

Inception The project is planned for the second half of 2022. The project has be completed at the end of 2023.
