Tender for the modernization of the Ełk – Białystok railway line

PKP Polskie Linie Kolejowe S.A. has announced a tender for worth PLN 6 billion for the modernization of the Białystok-Ełk railway line, the largest in the of the company's history. The investment under Rail Baltica will reduce travel time to 55 minutes, at a speed of up to 200 km/h. The investment, implemented as part of the international Rail Baltica line is to improve comfort and safety passengers and improve freight transport.

The tender was announced on January 3, 2025 and includes: comprehensive modernization of railway infrastructure. The modernization will cover 100 km tracks, 8 stations and 10 stops, and the entire line will be equipped with a second track and modern traffic control systems. A Local Hospital will be created in Białystok Control Center. With 20 new road viaducts, 12 railway viaducts and crossings under the tracks, rail-road level crossings will be eliminated, which will improve safety and traffic flow.

Passengers will benefit from comfortable, modern platforms adapted to the needs of people with reduced mobility. Two new ones will be created stops: Dziękonie and Ciemnoszyje, and others will change their location to better meet the needs of residents.

The modernisation will enable the transport of goods at a speed of up to 120 km/h and the length of trains up to 750 m, which will have a positive impact on the development of logistics in Region.

The tender covers only contractors from the European Union, European Economic Area and the WTO countries, in order to ensure that the security of investment implementation. Construction works are planned for the years 2025–2029. After their completion, the Białystok-Ełk railway line will become a key regional and international transport under Rail Baltica.
