Ballads and romances have been published in June 1822 in Vilnius as the main part of the first volume Pose by Adam Mickiewicz. Written in the years 1819–1821, the cycle of poems determined the beginning of the history of Romantic poetry in Poland, becoming for a new era one of the most important points of reference. This is an innovative and original collection, and at the same time captivating with the naturalness of style and simplicity of language.

The poems show wide writing possibilities of an outstanding author, who against the background of atmospheric nature created a fascinating and unique world full of emotionality, fantasy and folk Morals. The collection of Mickiewicz's poetry soon became literary an event, arousing great enthusiasm among lovers of national literature. To this day, the poems of this cycle are extremely popular, and their contemporary meaning for Polish culture confirms the Year of Polish Romanticism, announced in 2022 on the occasion of the bicentenary of the publication of the collection.
