Openly A 23-kilometre section of the Via Baltica expressway, i.e. a junction Szczuczyn to the Ełk Południe junction (Zdunki) is good news not only for residents of Ełk and ełk poviat, but also of the entire region. Completed just a section with a two-lane cross-section in each direction, it will shorten the all travel time to the central part of the Polish. It will also improve the quality and travel safety.

In the meeting and the commissioning of the Via Baltica section was attended by m.in Minister infrastructure Andrzej Adamczyk, deputy of the Ełk Land Wojciech Kossakowski, Warmian-Masurian Voivode, Mayor of Ełk, local government officials, director the Olsztyn branch of the General Directorate for National Roads and Motorways, and contractors of the investment.

- When it appeared the idea of implementing a project called Via Baltica many people doubted the its success. Later, when subsequent sections were put into service, the number of doubters it was decreasing, but success was still doubted. I personally never doubted. I have believed continuously since 2008, from which year the municipal government sought the course of Via Baltica through Ełk and our region. I believed as president and as Ełczanin. It was possible – thanks to the close cooperation of local governments and parliamentarians, voivodes, marshals, designers and contractors – from 2008 to today. Today I thank them all on behalf of myself and the residents.

Reopening the built section of the S61 expressway Szczuczyn – Zdunki is a good a message not only for all Ełczans, but also for the entire region. We all want to drive faster, safer and more comfortable. Of the most of the european Union region excluded by transport, we are becoming an important hub road and rail, thanks to the emerging Rail Baltica. Here opens a window on a world for the people of Ełk, for investment. Now Ełk – the capital of Masuria is waiting with impatience for the next section – already to Ełk – said Tomasz Andrukiewicz, Mayor of Ełk.

On the other hand, within the implementation of the task of building Via Baltica on the section Ełk Południe (Zdunki) – A high connector will also be built during the future S16 (departure to Olsztyn) and Ełk East junction (Bojar) on the connection with the S61 (Via Baltica). Expected date completion is the second quarter of 2023.
